Lawsuit Over Wireless Internet Patent Reaches Settlement

In 2005, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), a branch of the Australian Government brought a patent infringement lawsuit against a number of companies, including Netgear, Nintendo, Toshiba, and 3Com.

The suit alleged that these companies had infringed on a patent relating to wireless internet technology. The technology at issue is used in almost all laptop computers and video game systems.

Recently, attorneys for CSIRO announced that a settlement had been reached. Although the eight jurors have already been impaneled and the trail begun, the defendants were looking to end the trial prematurely through a settlement. Prior to trial, the defendants stipulated that if the patent on the wireless technology was valid, they did in fact infringe on the patent.

The settlement remains sealed.
